Driving innovation through data

Using data from its members and other sources, the Network conducts system-level analyses to develop evidence-based pathways and to inform emerging models of rehabilitative care. The Network also assesses the impact of these new models of care and other system changes on health outcomes, system efficiency and cost.

In addition, members use the Network’s data analyses to measure their performance and guide quality improvement activities.

Current work includes the following:

  • Monitoring outpatient rehab access and performance: The Network analyzes data on patients who have received outpatient rehabilitation in the Toronto area following total joint replacement, stroke and hip fracture. These quarterly reports allow hospitals to identify whether they are meeting wait-time recommendations and which patients are declined and why. Hospitals can also benchmark their performance against best practices and other hospitals and identify opportunities for quality improvement. The Network’s most recent report (2020/21) analyzes the impact of the pandemic.
  • Benchmarking performance in hip fracture rehab: The Network analyzes hip fracture data on patients in acute care and rehabilitation hospitals in the Toronto area. The quarterly reports allow hospitals to measure their performance against the recommended benchmarks in the quality-based procedures clinical handbook and each other to improve their performance.
