Enhancing system capacity and flow for CCC patients with tracheostomies
Date: December 8, 2022
To better understand demand and capacity for patients with tracheostomies, the Network recently interviewed select members to capture flow issues for this patient population and identify opportunities to maximize system capacity.
Interviews highlighted the following:
- lack of bed turnover in CCC – programs are at capacity and there are few to no discharge destinations beyond CCC;
- demand for service continues to exist, with long waitlists for CCC tracheostomy beds; and
- health human resources challenges, including the need for a specialized skillset to care for these patients.
The Network is now conducting a current state analysis by analyzing waitlists, determining current capacity in Toronto CCC programs, discerning the models of care across programs and understanding the resources (human, equipment or otherwise) that would be required to maximize capacity. When the analysis is complete, the Network will share its findings with members and make recommendations to Ontario Health.
