Non-emergency patient transport model expands
Date: October 23, 2024
A pilot of the successful non-emergency patient transport (NEPT) model with a second group of GTA hospitals is now complete.
Spread of the NEPT model has been underway since January 2024 and has been enriched with learnings from the first phase of this project. Its goal is to help reduce admission delays to rehab/CCC hospitals due to transportation booking issues by having the rehab team book transportation for patients to be admitted to their hospital, rather than a member of the acute care team.
In this phase, both Scarborough Health Network and Michael Garron Hospital have adopted the piloted model as their standard practice, alongside Hennick Bridgepoint Health and Providence Healthcare, for transportation booked with Voyago Health. The Secretariat has monitored both quantitative and qualitative data to assess the impact of this change, with key reported observations including the following:
- The volume of patients admitted to Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital and Providence Healthcare has increased since the start of pilot, as compared to baseline volumes.
- Rehab partners have noted an ability to receive up to twice as many same-day admissions with the new process, and that the process is smoother with fewer late admissions.
As Rajeev Chandok, Senior Consultant, Project Management and Improvement at Scarborough Health Network notes, “this initiative has been a favourable experience with a good outcome. The process is implementable and workable.”
