The GTA Rehab Network continues to advance its Non-Emergency Patient Transport (NEPT) initiative, aimed at reducing delays and improving timely transfers of patients from acute care to inpatient rehab.

On May 20, the NEPT booking process was launched between the following sites: University Health Network and St. Michael’s Hospital as acute care sites, and Providence Healthcare as the receiving (rehab) site. While each of these hospitals had previously used the process with other partners, this marked the first time they were directly connected through NEPT.

Early feedback has been very positive:

  • Acute care teams report smoother communication and time savings for clinicians, with no need to follow up on transport calls. Staff are eager to see more rehab sites added to the booking process.
  • Rehab teams note fewer errors and greater control, with more accurate information on patient arrival times that helps them plan their workdays.

Overall, sites are reporting fewer “missed opportunities” (instances where a patient is ready for transfer but transportation is unavailable), and rehab beds are being filled more consistently.

The Network will continue to evaluate progress as implementation expands to additional hospitals across the GTA.
